1. Are all your underlay’s First
Quality Rolls ?
Absolutely, all our underlays are First Quality and we do not sell
any second or ‘B’ Grade rolls
2. Is a Carpet Underlay necessary?
A carpet underlay is vital when it comes to fitting a new carpet.
Here are the reasons why its so important every carpet needs an
underlay;
Protection
Dramatically reduces the Wear & Tear and stress on the carpet.
Without an underlay, the structure of the carpet would deteriorate
Heat Insulation
A wool-rich underlay provides a barrier effect to stop heat flowing
through the floorboards which helps prevent heat loss. It also helps
stops under floor draughts and both of these combined, you can cut
heating bills & make your carpet & room feel much warmer.
Sound Proofing
Helps prevent airborne noise & impact noise above or below.
Dust Movement
An underlay helps prevent airflow under the carpet which therefore
helps prevent movement of dust
Comfort
A quality underlay makes a huge difference to that soft, comfort
feeling underfoot.
Appearance
An underlay helps even out any uneven floors or floorboards which
keeps appearance of your carpet looking the same throughout the
whole room
Carpet Fitting
Most carpets fitted today are ‘Stretch Fitted’ –
this is a method whereby the carpet is stretched onto the carpet
grippers. The underlay helps even the surface and enhances the finished
look.
Furniture Markings
An underlay supports the strength of the carpet & therefore
helps prevent damages made by furniture
3. Do all carpets
require an underlay?
Woven Carpets
These have a very hard hessian backing on, which doesn’t offer
any cushioned support – therefore an underlay is essential
Secondary backed Carpets
Perhaps the most common carpets sold & used in the Domestic
Market. The backing consists of either a polypropylene mesh or hessian
and therefore has no support. Underlay again is also vital
Felt backed carpets
These types of carpets consist of a thin felt backing and are generally
sold as having in built underlay. But please note, they offer very
little support to the carpet and do not have the benefits of an
underlay as listed we listed above. We also recommend another underlay
to help support the carpet further.
Foam Backed Carpets
Underlays are not recommended for use with these types of carpets.
4. Which underlay should i buy –
there are so many?
We recommend Wool-Rich Felt underlay is still the best choice for
your carpet because
- Gives good Heat Insulation (due to its Wool-Rich blend)
- Gives a sponge feeling underfoot

Perfect for cold floors, rooms. Ideal for cottages. Cut down heating
bills dramatically. Warm & sensational underfoot.
- Tredaire
Red Colours– This underlay provides the best
sponge feeling underfoot. Its thick soft sponge rubber makes your
feet sink down into your carpet. If your looking for the best
comfort feel underfoot, this is the best underlay for you.
- Cloud
9 Cumulus – Perhaps the best underlay for a
bit of everything. It gives great insulation & amazing sound
proofing properties. It also gives that superb sponge feeling
underfoot. Its the no.1 voted underlay in the trade today and
excel is quality like no other PU Foam underlay.
5. I’ve been told Felt Underlays
are no good and are condemned by carpet fitters, is this true?
Absolutely not – Traditional Felt Underlays which were made
from hessian/jute fibres were well known to flattern giving no cushion
feeling underfoot. This is not the case anymore as our felt underlays
are extremely rich in wool which offers superb soft spring feel
underfoot unlike the old Traditional Felt Underlays. Carpet fitters
also have to use more blades & time to cut felt underlays which
nibbles away at retailers profits – this is the reason you
don’t see Felt available in retail stores.
6. I have underfloor heating, which underlay
should I buy?
We recommend the
Roma Underlay due it very low Thermal Properties (0.8 TOG) which
allows the heat to flow up through to the carpet. It also has a
good thickness of 7mm approx giving good comfort underfoot.
7. Which underlay is the best for Heat
Insulation?
Our Multi-Rich
56oz is superb for Heat Insulation due to its Rich in Wool blend
& its thickness of 15mm. Its perfect for cold concrete floors.
8. Which underlay is the best for Sound
Insulation?
Tredaire
Colours Red offers outstanding Sound Insulation with a 46db
reduction.
9) Which underlay gives the best comfort
feeling underfoot?
There are 3 underlays we recommend are the best, starting from
the top;
10. Which underlay should i buy for a
cold concrete floor?
We recommend our thick wool-rich felt underlay – Multi-Rich
56oz. Due to its rich wool blend, it offers superb heat insulation
properties making it ideal for cold concrete floors.
11. Which underlays are best suitable
for the stairs?
Cloud
9 Cirrus & Multi-Rich
42oz are the underlays we recommend for staircases. They are
hard-wearing and are ideal for those pointy corners which put most
underlays under stress.
12. Which underlay would you recommend
for wooden floorboards?
Certainly a thick felt underlay (Multi-Rich 56oz) has the ability
to sink into all the small uneven cracks which levels out the floor
tremendously well. This gives the carpet a much smoother surface
to be laid out on.
13. I only need a small amount of underay
– do you sell part rolls?
Yes we do, for all our underlays we offer ‘Half Rolls’
which come in handy for when you don’t need a full roll to
cover your room. Look for the drop down column on the product page
